Dès le début du confinement, j’ai eu envie d’explorer le journal sonore. Sans autre intention que celle de faire une cueillette par jour de l’état sonore de mon environnement. Situé dans la salle de bain,
le puits de lumière offre une fenêtre sur le ciel, c’est mon point d’ouïe préféré à la maison. Cet espace acoustique particulier, avec ces parois de verre et de métal, filtre les sons de la rue portés par le vent. Depuis le 13 mars, perchée sur un tabouret et munie de mon enregistreur fixé au bout d’un manche à balai, j’écoute et je capte
1 min par jour les sons de mon quartier au temps du confinement. Repère. Phare. Empreintes. Cette pièce est la compilation de 68 minutes confites entre le 13 mars et le 20 mai 2020. Le journal se poursuit.

When the lockdown first began, I wanted to explore the sound diary, with no other intention other than taking the pulse of the sonic state of my environment once a day. Located in the bathroom, a skylight offers a window to the sky and is my favourite listening spot in the house. This particular acoustic space, with its walls of glass and metal, filters the street sounds carried by the wind. Starting on March 13, perched on a stool and equipped with my recorder attached to the end of a broomstick, I have listened to and recorded 1 min per day of the sounds of my neighbourhood during the lockdown. Marker. Beacon. Impressions. This work is the compilation of 68 minutes preserved between March 13 and May 20, 2020. The diary continues.

Magali Babin est une artiste sonore. Ses recherches abordent l’écoute comme outils d’attention et de rassemblement collectif. Dans ses récents projets, elle aborde le rapport identitaire aux sons en lien avec la perception de l’environnement et la mémoire auditive.
Babin s’est produite en concert et en performance dans le cadre de festivals internationaux au Canada, aux États-Unis, au Mexique et en Europe. Ces installations sonores ont été présentées, entre autres, au Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal (Triennale Québécoise 2011), au Mois Multi (Qc. 2018), au FITU (Mexico. 2020). Elle poursuit actuellement ses recherches dans le cadre d’un doctorat en Études et pratiques des arts à l’UQAM.

Magali Babin is an interdisciplinary artist with a practice in sound art. Exploring space as sound material, Babin draws her materials from haptic proximities, acoustic landscapes, and real-life contexts to create environments composed of sequences, textures, and perspectives. Her works explore imperceptible aspects that create alertness and attention through listening. In recent projects, Babin has examined perception and memory by investigating the ways we identify sounds. Babin has performed in international festivals in Canada, USA, and Europe. Her installations have been presented at the MACM as part of the 2011 Quebec Triennial (MTL), at Mois Multi 2012 (QC), and at La Fabrique in 2013 (Nantes, France). Babin has a master’s degree in visual and media arts from UQAM and is currently completing a PhD in art studies at the same university. She obtained support from the Quebec Research Fund – Society and Culture (FRQSC) for her doctoral research.
